Tee Markers

Around five years ago the Club introduced a multi-tee system, making all tee options available to every member and visitor across all days of the week. Alongside this change, we wanted to move away from the traditional distinction between men's and women's tees and remove any reference to colour from our tee markers — instead naming each course option to give them their own identity.

At the time, the tee markers weren't clear enough to make this work as intended. We have now addressed this with updated markers that are significantly clearer and easier to read, and we are pleased to formally announce that we are moving away from the coloured tee system entirely.

Going forward, our courses will be known by name only — AchillesRoyalist and Leander. There will be no colour references on the new markers, and we hope this change reflects a more inclusive and modern approach to the game at Waitemata. The Royalist/Leander composite course will remain available as an option, as will the Bayley's tees.

This change will come into effect from Wednesday 29th July.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Navy Golf Society for their generous contribution towards the cost of the new tee markers.

Golf Committee News

Ground Conditions

As we reach the middle of winter, the Golf Committee would like to remind all players to please respect the course while ground moisture levels remain high.

As always, please repair pitch marks—aim for at least one per hole, even if it is not your own. Carry a sand bucket to repair divot damage, and please do not take trundlers between greenside bunkers and the greens.

Please also familiarise yourself with our Local Rules (available on the website). Of particular relevance at this time of year is the Local Rule relating to Spongy Turf:

Areas of “Spongy Turf” are defined as ground that significantly changes shape when a player applies weight to it, yet no temporary water appears on the surface.

Put simply, if there is ground movement when you take your stance, you may apply the same relief rule as you would for temporary water.

Playing in Competitions

Please be aware that if you are playing in any golf competition, you must complete every hole unless you have picked up under the rules of a Stableford competition. "Gimmes" are not permitted under any circumstances in competition golf.

Scorecards

For competitions, you may choose either a printed scorecard or a digital scorecard. The Golf Committee strongly encourages the use of digital scorecards.

18-Hole Women

We are trialling a couple of initiatives over the next few months. Subject to member feedback, these may be adopted on a permanent basis. The trials will run through until the end of September.

Course Choice
For all competitions, players may now choose to play either the Composite Royalist/Leander course or the Leander course. There are a few system limitations affecting some multi-round competitions that have already commenced. If you have any difficulty printing a scorecard for your preferred course, please contact the Pro Shop staff for assistance.

Women's Saturday Scramble
Female players completing 18 holes before 1.00 p.m. on Saturdays are now eligible to enter the Women's Saturday Scramble.

Happy Golfing

SUNDAY MIXED PAIRS

Hi all,

Our next mixed pairs event for the year is on this Sunday 26th July. The draw will be posted on Dotgolf today but please recheck on Saturday night in case there have been any late changes. There are still spots available if anyone hasn't entered but would like to play.

The event this week is Canadian Foursomes. In this format both partners tee off and then one ball is selected. Whoever owns that ball cannot hit the second shot and then play continues as in regular foursomes (alternate shots) until the ball is holed out ie. nobody hits consecutive shots. Men will play from the Royalist tees and Women from the Leander tees.

Other details are:

Cost per person: $10 for members and $60 for non-members (Visitors welcome) - Waitemata Nine Hole members $25

The start sheet on the day will be a two tee set-up commencing at 11.30am. If you have entered and your names are missing from the start sheet please get in touch. Our apologies if this has happened. If you need to withdraw from this please email Gary rather than contacting the Club directly.

Prizegiving will follow the golf - the prize fund will be the total of the entry fees received. Participants must be present to receive a prize.

RULES PRESENTATION - SAVE THE DATE

Put it in your diary now. Tuesday 28 July at 11.30am we are having a rules presentation, and this one is open to all golf club members. Please come along even if you are not playing golf that day. $10 cash, please, to cover the presenter's costs. Payment and sign up is at the ProShop.

Esther and Chris will be presenting, and it is an excellent coverage of all the rules of golf you need to know. It puts us all on the same playing field so we genuinely know the rules together. One of our members noted that the last time they went they thought it would be dry, but it was actually really fun. They make it interesting with all sorts of visuals.

If you are working that day, ask for an extended lunch break and come along. Buy lunch and head upstairs for it. Well worth your time.
