Don’t wait - Check your prostate
Men aged in their 40s, 50s and 60s should have an annual prostate health check
Prostate cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in New Zealand. One in eight men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime. Prostate cancer kills more men than most other cancers or diseases. Over 4,500 men are diagnosed with cancer annually and 700 men die of prostate cancer each year. More men die annually from prostate cancer than women die from breast cancer.
If caught early, prostate cancer is fully curable. But if caught late – once the cancer is advanced – it can be fatal and lead to prolonged illness and an early death.
It is therefore essential that men in their 40s, 50s and 60s have a regular prostate health check with their doctor. The prostate health check involves a simple blood test to detect the level of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) and sometimes a simple physical examination.
So, if you are a man in your 40s, 50s or 60s, don’t wait. Have an annual prostate check-up with your doctor. It might save your life.
