Greenkeeper's Corner
We'll be adding semi-regular updates to our Newsletters with informative segments from our Greens Superintendent - Denis Coleman.
He'll fill us in on the lastest around the course. You'll find the first of these segments below:
Day-to-Day Course Maintenance
We thought we’d start this segment with a quick overview of the day-to-day work that goes into maintaining the course. We know many of you are curious about what actually happens behind the scenes.
Greens
- Greens are either mown or rolled every day.
- During summer, they are cut to 3mm, and in winter to 4mm.
- The slightly longer winter cut helps protect the grass during heavy traffic and wet conditions.
- Greens are sprayed every two weeks to help prevent or control disease and insects.
- Sanding and verti-cutting are carried out as often as weather conditions allow.
- Verti cutting is slicing the surface of the greens which cuts all the longer leafed plants off so we get a nice tight surface.
- This year, we’ve also started spraying for worms, which hasn’t been an issue in previous years.
Fairways
- Fairways are cut three times a week during summer and once a week in winter at a height of 12mm.
- Weed and worm spraying is carried out when required.
Tees
- Tees are cut twice a week at 12mm.
- Weed spraying and worm control are done as needed.
General Course Work
- Greens are fertilised every three weeks.
- Tees are fertilised once a month.
- We’ve also begun spraying the rough with a growth retardant to slow growth and help keep it under control.
Alongside all of this, there are plenty of manual jobs to keep on top of, including:
- Raking bunkers three times a week
- Changing holes
- Weed eating untidy areas
- General course tidy-up work
There’s always plenty to do, and with the great team of Campbell, Andrew, and Nick, we work hard to keep the course looking its best all year round.
Thanks,
Denis
