Club Champs House Keeping

  • Please ensure you check your tee times again for this Saturday as some times have been reshuffled due to players pulling out.
  • Please DO NOT enter the club scramble
  • If your match ends in a tie, please check in with the shop to determine what next steps are to determine a result. Do not assume you have automatic tee rights to continue your match. An example of what could be done if there is no tee times is to do a putt off,  chip off or flip a coin.
  • Please remember to complete the draw sheet or inform the pro-shop as to who won your match. It is not the shop staff’s responsibility to chase results!

Guidelines for cart exemptions during Club Championships.

The Golf Committee would like to clarify the situation regarding use of carts during Club Championship events. The rule is :  A  player can apply for an exemption to use a cart during a Club Championship, provided that they have a doctor’s certificate issued no earlier than three months prior to the first day of the Championship Round.

This rule applies to both Men and Women’s Matchplay and Strokeplay Championships. Consideration will be given to any member holding a permanent exemption.

TWILIGHT GOLF

Daylight Saving is nearly here and with it comes the return of Twilight Golf. This year sees a few changes from previous so please read through if you are thinking of participating in this fun event.

Commencement date is Tuesday 4th October at the usual time of 5.30pm. Cost is $10pp for members and $20pp for non-members. As usual, the bar will be open and Petr will be serving meals post-round. Entry will be by email to golf@waitematagolf.co.nz or with the pro shop. A start sheet for the following Tuesday night will be circulated each Tuesday in the clubhouse.

Competition format - 9 holes of Ambrose Golf using the WHS ( World Handicap System ) formula for calculating a team playing handicap. The system is a little complex to calculate but is far more equitable across the wide range of playing handicaps. Players are listed in playing handicap order ( not index order  as this may be different for mixed teams ) and then set percentages are applied.

Example:

Player 1: Hcp 3 x 25% = 0.75

Player 2: Hcp 5 x 20% = 1.0

Player 3: Hcp 14 x 15% = 2.1

Player 4: Hcp 22 x 10% = 2.2

The playing handicap for this team would be 6.05. Remember when playing the front nine women should add 2 to their playing handicap. This is because their course is rated two strokes higher than the mens.

Season Events - to encourage teams to play on a regular basis we will be allocating and tabulating points based on the weekly finishing positions. We are in talks with one of our sponsors and have yet to finalise arrangements but whatever the outcome there will be a team prize presented at Christmas. To qualify for this teams must register four names ( along with their team name ) with the proshop and each week a minimum of two, of the registered four, must play for the team to qualify for points.

Draft Golf Investment Plan

The Auckland Council Parks, Arts and Community Events Committee (PACE) met yesterday to discuss the Draft Golf Investment Plan and to vote whether to proceed.

For those interested CLICK HERE for a link to the Video Feed of that meeting, however be warned the entire debate on this subject is almost two hours long. The first 1hr 25mins is spent debating the plan and the final 35mins is the Councillors voting on the plan and justifying that vote.

Legal Letter to Council CEO

On Monday, Golf New Zealand, through its lawyer, sent a legal letter to the CEO of Auckland Council. This letter outlined to Council why any adoption of the plan would be unlawful. This letter was also sent to all Councillors, the Mayor and the Maori Statutory Board.

Despite this letter, the meeting proceeded and councillors were asked to vote on one of the three options:

Option 1: No golf investment plan (status quo)
Option 2: Consult on the changes to golf investment plan
Option 3: Adopt the amended golf investment plan

Although mentioned by several Councillors, the option of starting the process again as suggested by the golfing industry, and working with Stakeholders (Golf NZ and the Clubs) to get things right was not an option put to councillors for consideration.

Conclusion

After a tied vote between options 1 & 2, the casting vote sat with the Committee Chair Cr. Alf Filipaina who was not supportive of the Golf NZ position along with outgoing Mayor Phil Goff, and therefore Option 2 was adopted.

What this means for the golfing sector across Auckland remains to be seen however, during the discussion there was reference to clubs such as Waitemata which sit on low lying land being of little value for other activities, and providing important spaces for stormwater runoff.

In terms of local councillors, we'd like to recognise the support of Cr Richard Hills who spoke against the investment plan process and voted accordingly.
